Nicolas Roy scored the decisive goal 2:26 into overtime, and Jack Eichel added a goal. Two assists to lead the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night, securing their fourth consecutive win.
Roy found himself alone in front of Edmonton’s net and capitalized on his own rebound, slotting it past Stuart Skinner for the game-winner.
“It’s a gutsy win for us, a divisional game, and I thought we played well,” Eichel said. “They’re a really good team, they generate a lot of offense, and I thought we did a really good job limiting them.”
Pavel Dorofeyev and Jonathan Marchessault also scored for the Knights, who have now won eight of their last nine games and boast a 17-3-2 record since the All-Star break.
“It’s a big win, big road trip,” Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb said. “They were sneaking up on us, and we were able to get an extra point out of this game. It felt a little bit like a playoff game, for sure.”
Zach Hyman, Leon Draisaitl, and Warren Foegele scored for the Oilers, who saw their five-game winning streak end.
“It was a tight game. It was what you expect in the playoffs,” Draisaitl said. “It is obviously a team that we could face. I think we know how to handle these types of games. Tonight didn’t go our way, but we will take the point.”
Vegas struck first, scoring on their initial shot of the game just 61 seconds in when Eichel finished off a 2-on-1 feed from Ivan Barbashev, beating Skinner stick-side for his 27th goal.
The Oilers quickly responded, also scoring on their first shot. Draisaitl set up Hyman in front of the net, who redirected it past Knights goalie Laurent Brossoit for his 31st goal, giving Draisaitl a career-high 111 points.
Vegas regained the lead with a power-play goal late in the first period when Dorofeyev scored on a broken play.
Edmonton equalized midway through the second period on the power play, as Connor McDavid set up Draisaitl, who spun around and scored his 45th goal. It was also Draisaitl’s 28th power-play goal, the most in a season since Mario Lemieux in 1995-1996.
The Golden Knights went ahead 3-2 in the third period when Marchessault beat Skinner with a one-timer.
Edmonton tied it up again with 8:41 left in the third when Foegele scored his 13th of the season on a long wrist shot.
“It’s disappointing we didn’t get the two points,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. “Some of the goals we gave up were preventable. We will take the lessons from tonight and learn from it.”
