Tomas Hertl netted a power-play goal with 2:49 remaining in overtime to complete the Vegas Golden Knights’ comeback in a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.
Hertl finished a pass from Mitch Marner in front of the net for the winner, helping Vegas snap a three-game losing streak. Marner played a key role in the rally, scoring the game-tying goal late in regulation and adding two assists.
Reilly Smith and Ivan Barbashev also scored for the Golden Knights, while goaltender Adin Hill stopped 23 shots. The game marked Vegas’ third contest in four nights and concluded a five-game road trip.
Detroit was led by Simon Edvinsson and Alex DeBrincat, who each recorded a goal and an assist. Emmitt Finnie also scored, and Cam Talbot made 21 saves. Despite the loss, the Red Wings entered the night with a 24-1-3 record when leading after two periods.
Vegas captain Mark Stone, the team’s second-leading scorer, missed the game due to an upper-body injury.
The Golden Knights trailed 3-1 early in the third period but mounted a late comeback. Barbashev pulled Vegas within one with 8:23 remaining after capitalizing on a Detroit turnover. Marner then tied the game with 3:24 left, finishing a pass from Hertl.
Hertl was later called for tripping with 2:23 left in overtime, but Detroit was unable to convert on the power play, finishing the night 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Detroit had built its early lead in the first period. Smith opened the scoring before Finnie responded shortly after. Edvinsson gave the Red Wings the advantage with a shot from the slot, and DeBrincat extended the lead less than a minute later with a wrist shot past Hill.
