The Dallas Stars survived a furious late comeback by the Vegas Golden Knights, escaping with a 5-4 shootout win Thursday night after surrendering a three-goal lead in the third period.

Jason Robertson and Mikko Rantanen both scored in the shootout to secure the victory for Dallas, which has won four of its last five games. Vegas forced extra time when Mitch Marner kept the puck alive in the offensive zone and ripped a long slap shot from the left point with 48.7 seconds remaining in regulation.

Mavrik Bourque led the Stars offensively with his first career multi-goal performance, scoring twice. Matt Duchene and Wyatt Johnston also found the net, while Jamie Benn and Sam Steel each recorded two assists. Jake Oettinger made 17 saves for Dallas.

For Vegas, Marner and Keegan Kolesar each finished with a goal and an assist, Ivan Barbashev scored, and Reilly Smith added a short-handed goal. Smith now has 13 short-handed goals as a Golden Knight, just two shy of William Karlsson’s franchise mark. Adin Hill stopped 23 shots, but Vegas fell to 1-6 in shootouts this season and has dropped five of its last six games.

Dallas struck early for the third straight game, with Duchene capitalizing on an open net less than two minutes in. After Kolesar tied it early in the second period, the Stars erupted for three goals — including two from Bourque — to build a commanding lead. The Golden Knights answered with three goals in the third to force overtime, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
