Connor McDavid jump-started Edmonton’s offense with an early goal and added two assists, helping the Oilers withstand a late push from the Vegas Golden Knights in a 4–3 win Sunday night.

McDavid opened the scoring midway through the first period and later set up Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for two power-play goals. Zach Hyman also found the net and chipped in an assist as Edmonton rebounded from a loss in Minnesota by storming out to a 4–0 advantage early in the second period. Leon Draisaitl contributed a pair of helpers.

Goaltender Connor Ingram made 26 saves in his first appearance with Edmonton and his first NHL game of the season. Ingram, who played last year in Utah before entering the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program, earned the win in his Oilers debut after time in the AHL with Bakersfield.

Edmonton improved to 18-13-6 and has been nearly unbeatable when striking first, moving to 15-1-3 in those situations.

Vegas began its comeback late in the second period when Tomas Hertl scored on the power play. Hertl then set up Mitch Marner and Pavel Dorofeyev in the third, with Marner also converting on the man advantage to make it close. Noah Hanifin finished with three assists for the Golden Knights.

Carter Hart stopped 17 shots for Vegas in his return to play in Canada. The Sherwood Park native became the first of the five former Canadian world junior players who were acquitted of sexual assault charges to appear in an NHL game on Canadian ice since having his suspension lifted earlier this month.

Despite the late rally, Vegas fell short and has now dropped three straight games.
