Cole Caufield notched a goal and an assist to push his point streak to six games, and the Montreal Canadiens continued their surge with a 4–1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday night.
Zach Bolduc, Juraj Slafkovský, and Jake Evans each scored for Montreal, with Bolduc and Slafkovský both contributing a goal and an assist. Samuel Montembeault was stellar in net, stopping 30 shots and coming within five minutes of earning his first shutout since Feb. 25 — the Canadiens’ last shutout win.
Mark Stone provided the lone goal for Vegas, keeping his season-opening point streak alive at eight games. Playing just his second game after returning from a wrist injury, Stone helped the Golden Knights avoid being shut out for only the second time this season. Akira Schmid finished with 15 saves.
Despite the loss, Vegas generated more shots (31–19) and applied pressure throughout, but Montreal capitalized on prime scoring opportunities — registering 12 high-danger chances to Vegas’ 10, including several breakaways.
The defeat marked the Golden Knights’ fourth straight loss (regulation or OT) and continued a rough stretch at home, where they’ve gone 2-4-3 over their last nine games at T-Mobile Arena.
Earlier in the day, Montreal announced a major roster move, locking up defenseman Mike Matheson with a five-year, $30 million contract extension through the 2030–31 season.
