Akira Schmid stopped 24 shots for his second career regular-season shutout, and Ivan Barbashev scored the lone goal as the Vegas Golden Knights edged the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Barbashev broke the scoreless deadlock late in the second period, pouncing on a rebound and beating goaltender John Gibson with a slick backhand at 13:45. The goal was Barbashev’s fifth of the season and proved to be all Vegas needed.

Schmid, appearing in his 55th NHL game, earned his first shutout since February 2023 — when he blanked Philadelphia while playing for New Jersey. The 24-year-old Swiss netminder was steady throughout, turning aside several quality chances as Vegas improved to 7-4-2 on the season.

Gibson, making his second straight start for Detroit, was equally sharp in defeat with 33 saves. The Red Wings, who were looking to move atop the Eastern Conference standings, wrapped up their five-game road trip 3-2-0.

Detroit was without veteran forward Patrick Kane, sidelined with an upper-body injury, and will now play seven of its next eight games at home.

The Golden Knights, meanwhile, continued their six-game homestand with another disciplined defensive effort, limiting the Red Wings to just five shots in the final period.

Up Next:

  • Red Wings: Return home to host the New York Rangers on Friday night.

  • Golden Knights: Continue their homestand Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
